how is it possible that she is having the same speed on a 2-beat kick as the other competitor having a 6-beat kick.. looks to me as kicking with anything more than 2-beat kick is quite useless/not worth the energy
Tips for back floating: 1. Go into a ball like your going to cannon ball but don't tuck your chin. 2. Be relaxed. 3. Use one arm to hold your nose. 4. Use your other arm to turn yourself on your back. 5. Keep your chin up. 6. Keep your belly up. 7. Float
So are we not supposed to breathe while treading water?

I thought I was treading wrong the whole time because it feels like you’re flailing in the water (which you kinda are but it’s intentional) and this helped me relearn and recall how to tread water! I can swim and float really well but I have to work on treading fs. Good vid!

Katie swims what is known as gallop style for her freestyle. This is an uneven cadence for the arm pulls. The breathing side arm stays extended and 'glides' a bit before a quick 1, 2 pull. You will notice that she briefly is totally underwater for a slight bit which reduces the bow wave for less drag. I think surface tension is a minimal drag factor also. There is a slight porpoise motion to her as she swims, which is what enables her to go slightly under water on every stroke cycle. Like most distance swimmers, she also swims with about a 90 degree bend in her elbow where sprinters tend to be at 120 or more depending on the race. For me, I always counted the 4 beat kick as a 1, 2, 3, then a 1, For 6 beat, 1, 2, 3, and then 1, 2, 3.
With the gallop style its seems like you get into a rhythm
Well, it is a rhythm, the kicks do stay on the even beat, but the arms are not on an even beat. Watch the men warming up before they get on the blocks at the Olympic qualifying meet and it is obvious.
at squad we used to get told off if didn't hold breath from 3 strokes before the flip turn and 3 after. was torture.
practicing flips turns is a work out in its self. warm up and then start behind the flags, swim fast into the wall then swim back to past the flags.

Why is it now recommended to have your head so low in the water???? This is Not good form. You can have you head higher and easily keep your feet from dropping so that's not an excuse. Not trying to debate here, just not sure why improper technique is now being taught as the standard? Everything else looks good to help, especially beginners. Good job. 👍
How do you figure? I’m not being argumentative, just asking. Personally I noticed much better streamline and distance per stroke once I started swimming what at first felt like “downhill”.
